Utah Symphony

The Utah Symphony perform Aaron Copland’s symphonic composition El Salón México at Abravanel Hall. Includes footage from Paul Glickman and Tamarind King’s film (elsalonmexico.com). Conducted by Vladimir Kulenovic the full programme is as follows:

  • Bernstein: Overture to Candide
  • Revueltas: La Noche de los Mayas
  • Sarasate: Fantasy on Bizet’s Carmen for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 25
  • Bizet: “Les Toréadors” from Carmen Suite No. 1
  • Márquez: Danzón No. 2
  • Piazzolla: Cuatros estaciones porteños
  • Fernández: “Batuque” from Reisado do Pastoreio
  • Copland: El Salón México

The composition is a depiction of a mexican dance hall and so naturally uses Mexcian folk music liberally. The composition was first premiered in the U.S. in 1939, and Copeland even adapted the piece for the 1947 musical film Fiesta.
